A 55-year-old Chinese national died in hospital after a steel gate fell on him at Block 413 Yishun Ring Road on October 21, 2024. The worker was pushing a steel gate frame when it toppled and fell on him at approximately 6.50pm. He was conscious when taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

The Ministry of Manpower confirmed the occupier and employer as Jin Shan Construction, with Nee Soon Town Council as the project developer. A MOM spokesman noted that sliding gates must be properly designed and installed with appropriate stoppers to prevent derailment during use โ€” a standard safety requirement. The police found no evidence of foul play, though investigations remain ongoing.

MOM has instructed the firm to cease all work activities at the site pending the outcome of its probe. This fatality marked the sixth workplace death between July and October 2024, bringing the year's total to 25 โ€” a significant increase from 14 deaths during the same period in 2023. Vehicular incidents, falls from height, and structural collapses remain the leading causes of workplace fatalities in Singapore.
