Two separate fires erupted across Yishun on Friday, Aug. 23, 2024, forcing the evacuation of more than 110 residents from two HDB blocks within hours. The first fire broke out at Block 392 Yishun Avenue 6 around 1:25pm in a sixth-floor maisonette unit, where a young male occupant remained inside despite being coaxed to leave. SCDF firefighters forcibly entered and extinguished the blaze in the living room using a water jet; a neighbour reported hearing five loud bangs during the incident. Preliminary findings linked the fire to a PMD battery, with several devices parked in the living room. The walls, ceiling, and stairs of the unit were blackened by smoke and heat.

The second fire struck Block 345 Yishun Avenue 11 at 11:40pm, engulfing an eighth-floor bedroom in flames visible from outside. The occupant evacuated before SCDF arrived and declined hospital treatment. Around 100 residents were evacuated as a precaution. SCDF extinguished the fire with a water jet; the living room sustained heat and smoke damage. Preliminary investigation attributed this fire to power-assisted bicycle (PAB) batteries in the bedroom. Both incidents underscored the growing fire risk posed by lithium-ion battery devices in HDB flats across Yishun.
