Fire at Block 844 Yishun Street 81 sends two to hospital, forces 28 to evacuate

A bedroom fire at Block 844 Yishun Street 81 on the morning of June 18, 2026 sent two residents to hospital and forced 28 others to evacuate the building. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted at 11.50am and conducted forcible entry into the fifth-floor unit, extinguishing the blaze using two water jets. The fire spread beyond the bedroom, causing burn damage to the living room of the same unit, and also ignited the air-conditioning compressor on the sixth floor — which required a separate water jet to put out. One resident was conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation, while a second was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for chest discomfort. Preliminary findings point to an electrical origin in the affected bedroom. Nee Soon GRC MP Lee Hui Ying visited affected residents and confirmed that the Nee Soon South Community Club hall was opened for rest, with refreshments provided. SCDF used the incident to remind the public not to overload electrical outlets, leave devices charging unattended overnight, or use appliances without the Safety Mark. The fire comes amid a broader upward trend in residential fires in Singapore — SCDF's 2025 annual statistics recorded 1,051 fires in residential buildings, part of a 3 per cent overall rise from 2024.
