Netflix puts Yishun in the Upside Down to promote Stranger Things

In March 2017, Netflix featured Yishun MRT station in a promotional clip for Stranger Things, depicting the station inside the show's eerie "Upside Down" parallel universe with the caption: "Is Yishun cursed, simply unlucky, or struck by something stranger?" The spot leaned directly on Yishun's local reputation for strange happenings.

Netflix returned to the joke in October 2017 with a follow-up video titled "Stranger Yishun" that explicitly referenced the cat killings and other local lore. A global streaming giant building marketing around Yishun's reputation marked the moment the meme went properly mainstream.
