The dismembered and highly decomposed remains of 17-year-old Liang Shan Shan were discovered on 14 October 1989 in a forested vacant area of Yishun Industrial Park, twelve days after she was reported missing. National Servicemen on training exercises stumbled upon the scattered body parts, with the victim's skull located approximately one metre from the torso โ€” her identity confirmed only by a nametag on a nearby school uniform blouse. Forensic pathologist Professor Chao Tzee Cheng conducted the autopsy, finding injuries to the right ribcage and right cheekbone consistent with blunt force trauma or a fall, though the advanced state of decomposition prevented a definitive cause of death. The case could not be conclusively ruled a homicide, suicide, or accident, though the condition of the victim's skirt suggested possible sexual assault. The Yishun murder of Liang Shan Shan remains one of Singapore's most haunting unsolved cases from the late 1980s.
