Yishun man, 69, on trial for singing & banging cans outside neighbour's flat

A 69-year-old Yishun resident is contesting a charge of breaching a protection order after allegedly singing and striking metal objects outside his neighbours' home for about 11 minutes on February 5, 2026. Heng Choo Hwi, who lives at Yishun Street 51, was initially cordial with the couple but their relationship deteriorated, leading to repeated harassment allegations throughout 2025. The neighbours, Alvin Chan and Sheryl Seet, engaged lawyers to issue a cease-and-desist letter in August 2025, but the alleged behaviour continued, prompting them to seek an expedited protection order in December 2025.

The protection order was granted on January 12, 2026, and took effect on January 19, explicitly prohibiting Heng from singing or making deliberate loud noises in the immediate vicinity of the couple's flat. Prosecution footage showed a process server delivering the order documents to Heng outside his unit. Despite this, Heng allegedly breached the order weeks later by singing and banging cans at around 5:35pm on February 5, prompting Chan to call police.

Heng denies the order was properly served on him, despite the video evidence. He faces three charges in total: breaching the protection order through loud noises, pouring liquid outside the neighbours' flat, and kicking an item towards their unit. Two additional charges relating to making threats toward town council staff have been stood down temporarily while the trial proceeds.
