Yishun man blasts TV in retaliation against neighbour's laundry smell

A Yishun resident has escalated a corridor laundry dispute into an act of acoustic warfare, turning up his television volume in deliberate retaliation against what he describes as an "unbearable" and "very pungent" detergent smell emanating from his next-door neighbour's wet laundry. The complaint, posted to Facebook on June 25 by the resident — a 40-year-old technical analyst known only as Mr C — alleged that his neighbour had been hanging laundry and storing items in the common corridor for years, and that the chemical-like odour had "marinated" into the fabric. Mr C further claimed that prolonged exposure to the smell had exacerbated his father's respiratory symptoms, including persistent coughing and sneezing, and that the town council had been unable to resolve the matter despite repeated complaints. When STOMP visited the block, a laundry rack was observed outside the neighbour's unit, though the corridor was unobstructed, well-ventilated, received ample sunlight, and — crucially — had no noticeable smell. The neighbour, who declined to be named, denied that her laundry produced any significant odour, stating that any chemical scent dissipated within approximately 30 minutes, and that she only hung laundry outside two or three mornings a week before bringing it indoors by noon. She added that after the town council visited twice, she had stopped hanging laundry in the corridor entirely — yet claimed Mr C continued to make noise regardless. The Facebook post attracted over 660 likes and 290 comments, with netizens divided: some agreed that corridor laundry posed a fire hazard, while others urged compassion during rainy season for households without dryers. The dispute remains unresolved, with one neighbour sniffing grievously and the other absorbing the consequences of a television turned up in anger.
