Three men arrested after lighting up Yishun sky with illegal Deepavali fireworks
Three men aged between 30 and 32 were arrested after setting off illegal fireworks from the top deck of a multi-storey car park at Block 419A, Yishun Avenue 11 at 12.07am on Deepavali 2017. Fireworks have been banned in Singapore since 1972 under the Dangerous Fireworks Act, which prohibits possession or discharge of dangerous fireworks โ a detail the trio apparently chose to celebrate rather than observe. Residents in the area reportedly appreciated the unsanctioned display, which lit up the Yishun sky in what was presumably a heartfelt if legally inadvisable tribute to the festival of lights. The three men face up to two years' jail and fines of between S$2,000 and S$10,000 if convicted, making this arguably the most expensive Deepavali fireworks show in Yishun's recorded history.
