Detainee disarms cop, fires revolver at Khoo Teck Puat hospital in Yishun
On 20 June 2015, Muhammad Iskandar bin Sa'at, a 23-year-old deliveryman held in police custody at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Yishun, overpowered Staff Sergeant Muhammad Sadli bin Razali after the officer relaxed his restraints for a blood test. Iskandar struck Sadli with a metal IV pole, seized the officer's loaded .38 Taurus service revolver, and fired three rounds through a pillow in what prosecutors later described as one of the worst cases of violence against police in Singapore.
One bullet struck Sadli's foot, another his left thumb, while the third missed. Security officers and a doctor quickly subdued and sedated Iskandar. Sadli underwent surgery and recovered from his injuries.
Iskandar was initially charged with unlawfully discharging a firearm under the Arms Offences Act, which carried a mandatory death penalty. After defence representations, the charge was reduced to unlawful possession with intent to cause harm, removing capital punishment but retaining a mandatory life sentence. On 19 March 2018, Justice Chan Seng Onn sentenced him to life imprisonment and 18 strokes of the cane, calling it an extremely serious offence. The rare hospital shooting prompted a statement from Home Affairs Minister Teo Chee Hean and a review of police escort procedures for detainees.
