Dead cat at Yishun Street 51 sparked abuse fears — but it was just a car
A black-and-white cat was found dead at Block 510A Yishun Street 51 on June 1, 2025, at around 3am, with its hind legs splayed awkwardly and faeces nearby—raising immediate suspicion of animal cruelty in a community already traumatised by the death of King Kong, a beloved cat found in the same area just weeks earlier. A young resident who discovered the carcass buried it with help from another resident before reporting the incident to police and NParks. The discovery was shared widely in the Facebook group Sayang Our Singapore's Community Cats by Janet, an active community member, who called for a postmortem and cited the unusual leg positioning and surrounding faeces as evidence of foul play.
NParks exhumed the carcass for examination and investigation, including CCTV review of the area. However, on June 3, NParks concluded that the cat had likely died from a vehicular accident, not deliberate abuse. A postmortem examination found injuries consistent with blunt force trauma—fractures of the pelvis and sternum, multiple areas of haemorrhage, and partial prolapse of the right eye—with no evidence of penetrating or sharp force wounds. NParks confirmed the carcass was initially found on the road by a passer-by, who moved it to the nearby void deck, explaining the awkward positioning.
The incident reflected broader community anxiety: King Kong, found dead at the same location on May 9 with severe injuries, was also determined to have died from a vehicular accident despite initial suspicions of torture. Janet had raised the reward for information about King Kong's death to S$5,000 following the second discovery.
