Cat found mutilated near Yishun MRT; second feline dead behind hospital
Two cats were found dead in Yishun on Thursday, February 9, 2017, reigniting fears of animal cruelty in the neighbourhood. One cat was discovered on a road divider near Yishun MRT Station with its throat slit, according to Facebook user Fadillah AR, who reported the incident to the Singapore Community Cats page. A second cat was found lying behind Khoo Teck Puat Hospital with its white fur matted in blood and its body severely mutilated, posted by the Yishun 326 Tabby Cat welfare group.
The Agri-food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) collected both carcasses for investigation. However, subsequent CCTV footage revealed that the cat found behind the hospital had been attacked by two stray dogs, ruling out deliberate animal cruelty in that case. The status of the cat found near Yishun MRT Station remained unclear, with the carcass reportedly not recovered by volunteers who rushed to the scene.
The incidents marked a resurgence in Yishun's troubled history with animal deaths. Over the preceding 18 months, the neighbourhood had experienced a spate of cat killings, leading to enhanced enforcement and volunteer patrols. In December 2015, Lee Wai Leong, a 41-year-old man with moderate intellectual disability, was arrested and charged for flinging a cat from a public housing block. He was sentenced to 18 months' probation in June 2016. Residents expressed concern and called for swift action to identify any culprits.
