King Kong: beloved Yishun community cat mutilated, drawing ministerial outrage
On the morning of 9 May 2025, a well-loved community cat named King Kong was found dead near the entrance to the Oleander Breeze @ Yishun estate (around Blocks 510 and 511, Yishun Street 51). The cat had been disembowelled, its eyes gouged out and its body slashed; a feeder said it appeared to have been placed on the road to look like a hit-and-run, though the body was not crushed as a vehicle impact would have left it. The death was reported by regular feeder Min Kaung through the "Sayang Our Singapore's Community Cats" group, and residents set up a memorial. Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, a Member of Parliament for the area, publicly condemned the killing as "appalling cruelty", writing "What kind of person will do this? This is not who we are as a people." The National Parks Board opened an investigation. Weeks later, around 1 June 2025, another cat was found dead with its legs splayed at the foot of a staircase at Block 510A Yishun Street 51, close to where King Kong was found. No perpetrator has been identified in either case.
