Riot police deploy to Yishun flat to extract shirtless man from locked toilet
A 40-year-old man in nothing but blue shorts triggered a full riot police response at Block 317C Yishun Avenue 9 on Sunday, 27 September 2020. Officers arrived to find the man barricaded inside a locked toilet, shouting hysterically and refusing repeated calls to open the door โ prompting the Singapore Police Force to escalate deployment to the Police Tactical Unit of the Special Operations Command over concerns the man, who had a sharp object with him, might harm himself or others. The man eventually opened the door of his own accord and was apprehended under Section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act before being conveyed, conscious, to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Multiple police cars and anti-riot vehicles drew a crowd of onlookers at midday, making what began as a welfare call one of Yishun's more theatrical lunchtime spectacles of 2020.
